Each element has it's perks, I'd go with air though as with the proper applications it makes a terrific offense and defense.

Air defianitly has a huge advantage if applied correctly.  Move all the air away from a person's lungs and have them sufforcate.

You forgot Sandbending. Which I would do, cause then I could look like a Tusken Raider and not worry about getting sand in my shorts at the beach. That and I could bend sand in someone's eyes.

EDIT: And Hitomi, i'm surprised your not the first person who choose fire and say "I got fire, IN MY PANTS!" Bravo

the sand is a form of earthbending that folks out in the desert mastered.

Me? Water, totally. I'm all about waves n flow n junk.~  Air and fire have some fluid dynamics to them too, but nothing like water.

Air if done right can basically end firebending in it's tracks, if airbending can create a vaccum, you can stop any fire from forming, if not, redirect the flow of air to maybe change the path the fire takes.

The fire style is agressive though, so you gotta be really REALLY on the ball about keeping that vaccume where it's needed and not getting eventually punched in the face if they charge in. I don't think it would work all that well. Air is really better used as a game of redirection, push the flame away, or back at it's attacker if you're really good.

I doubt I'd pick fire since I'm always weary of things that are hot and dangerous.  Earth bending is cool but it still seems a bit destructive just in its very implementation.  Water bending is more cool in my opinion, but you have to have water available to actually use it.  I also like the healing aspect that's associated with it.  So it'd come down to that, or air bending, since the latter lets you fly + air is an abundant resource no matter where you go.

How far does earth bending go?  I notice they couldn't bend metal; else you could go all Magneto on them.  How about using its power to pull out gemstones and diamonds and use them for razor sharp projectiles, plus for monies too.  In theory you could use a crystal and harness just normal sunlight to create LASERS!

refraction doesn't actually work like that, sorry. Nevertheless, gemstones seem to be within the reach of powerful earthbenders, based on Bumi's use of the gems in the episode where he first shows up. so razor sharp projectiles? Just maybe.

I don't know what element I would go with. So instead, I'll list what I'd try to do with each!

With firebending, I would probably make a lot of things out of metal by carving out molds and melting the metal so I can pour it in, and also to start up blast furnaces. And if i could use lightning too, I would go arounding making weird electrical effects, like Saint Elmo's fire. I would also use my abilitys to power various engine, if I had them.

With earthbending, I would buld and/or tunnel out a building to make into a fortress/workshop/labyrynth/whatever, and also a set of stone dolls that I would use in a puppet theatre. And according to the Wiki on the show, you can also do magetic stuff with earthbending, which I would of course use to stick things to other things.

With waterbending, I would power hydrolic devices, and to put myself into stasis so I could go to THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. Also snowball making.

With airbending, I would power windmills and boats, and to hold a blanket over me as a form of shade, to float away whenever I wanted to leave, and generaly to be aloof and lazy. Also, I would give myself a beach bum accent for absolutley no reason whatsoever.

But no matter what, I would use my bending powers to pull annoying pranks, like taking out the glass in a window and replacing it with ice, so they'll be like "Wait why is my window melting?". CALL ME THE TRICKSTAVATAR.

I'll go with earth, gemstones would definatly be cool.  Magnetic powers would also be nice.

And also I can say that "Its all about rock and getting stoned."

Creepy Ba Sing Se is creeeeeeeeeepyyyyyy. Avatar Aang should have offed Long Feng right then and there and saved himself the headache of assuredly having to do later. Still, what with hypnotism, puppet governments, and all, Avatar just took a turn for the awesome. Something about Ju Di being replaced there just tears at the pit of your stomach. So where does that leave us?

(robot) Roll Call:
Long Feng and the tradition gaurd: in control of everything in Ba Sing Se, running a brainwashing organization, generally ignoring problems outside the walls. (to keep themselves in power assumedly since they don't seem to care for general welfare.)
Jet: Smiley and happy. There is no war within the walls.
Smellerbee and Longshot: Blending into the crowd currently. Think they'll try to get Jet back? I assume so, but it's possible they've fallen out with him there and just don't care anymore.
Zuko and Iroh: Thanks to Iroh, they'll probably be running their own Tea House soon enough. Not raising any suspiscion except maybe for the fact that Zuko knows swording pretty well. I wonder if the White Lotus society will come into play again, seeing as we're really into the game of politics right now, and need to give Iroh some more chance to be awesome
The GAang: Basically under surveilence to the point of being unable to accomplish anything. Toph is pissed, but knows better than to open her mouth. So Aang and Katara will be mouthy about unfairness and hiding the war and whatnot, but the one who's really gonna get in trouble here is Sokka, who's too smart about people en mass for his own good. He'll come up with one of those trademark good ideas and the tradition gaurd will haul him off. Alternatively, it just struck me that aside from being smart enough not to go against the flow, Toph can't be hypnotized by lights, and can earthbend out of any situation they leave her in. PLOT DEVICE POSSIBLY?

I had other thoughts but I lost them while I slept, oh well.
