Title: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Boris on September 13, 2006, 12:45:32 pm
Imagine my shock when I noticed we didn't even have a topic for this show. I'd totally been bothering people for weeks about it, and I know we have several other fans here.

So yeah, for like the one person who didn't already hear, I love this show. It has beautiful art, interesting story, and fun characters.

So hey, the new episodes come on Friday. Comcast on Demand and a bunch of theater screenings have already aired it, and I'm looking, but I don't see a copy surfaceing on the interbutt anywhere. Still, it's not that far off, and I'm impaitent.

We've only heard you tell us about like a thousand times, AND NO TOPIC?

Eh, the topic will happen when it happens. I'm betting some of us will have things to say after the new episodes Friday. If not, no big loss, right?

Well, I can say without a doubt that it was pretty awesome. I think I'll go Vito's route and sum it up in + and -'s

The Seprent's Pass:
+ Returning characters. Suki is a welcome face, Jet & Co. are still shifty and untrustworthy as ever, but damn are they experts. Stealthy Action with Jet and Zuko swordplay was fun.
+ Some real work on the characters of Aang and Sokka, which has been missing for a while. Aang was sitll taking things badly, and this was a good show of reactions. Sokka's past is still effecting him a little, and they did a good job showing it.
+ Holy hell at the uses of bending and action here. Parting the Red Sea, Ice block surfing to beat the snake, etc.
+ Good funny stuff. Toph's "You can just let me drown now." Line pretty well takes the cake.

- Hokey episode is hokeeeeeeyyyyyyy. I can buy everything that was done, so it didn't step outside of reality, but damn there was a lot of 'camp' toward the end, Aang's reaction, naming the kid, Sokka kissing.
- Sokka being overprotective just struck me as a little beyond his character and 'slap you in the face' writing to make sure we got it.

The Drill:
+ Best steampunk device ever
+ Action enough for any action fan ever. Ty Lee kicking ass, Drill beatery, the final fight between Aang and Azula (THING HANDS~~~) culminating in EPIC SPIKE POUNDING.
+ Ty Lee paying way too much attention to Sokka. Sokka noticeing. The man is a pimp
+ The classic sharp and funny moments. Almost a +/- due to yet another bloody blind joke. (after a while it gets old.) but the deapan delivery saves this one. Toph has the best line again with "oh, what a nightmare." In response to Sokka not being able to see.

+/- Sokka having a eureka moment. Could have been more on topic, and Aang really had to suppliment it later.

- Sokka being incapable of doing anything afterward. The cheerleading was annoying as heck, and not funny, though vito argues.
- Incompetent Earth Kingdom leadership again. How the hell did these people survive this long. Probably due to:
- Incompetent Fire Nation leadership again. Good thing we have a 15 year old psychopath along because the adults sure arn't very foreward thinking.

THE FUTURE:
I See a really awesome Jet twin hookblades and Zuko twin broadswords fight coming up in a few episodes. Other than that, I'm a bit mystified as to where they're going to go with this. the gAang is looking to tell the leadership about what they learned back in 'The Library,' not to mention looking for Appa. So they have some direction, but really, where they're going spescificall is baffeling.

Heres a question, If you could bend, what element (ANY element) would you bend?

I would be an Airbender. Not water because I can't swim for shit. Not Fire because I'm not a big fan o warm days. Not earth because its boring.
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Armchair on September 18, 2006, 03:48:39 pm
Earth != Boring. What you do with earth can stay for years. Buildings for instance. If you could water bend, you wouldn't have to swim.
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Bluejay on September 18, 2006, 10:25:34 pm
Each element has it's perks, I'd go with air though as with the proper applications it makes a terrific offense and defense.

Air defianitly has a huge advantage if applied correctly.  Move all the air away from a person's lungs and have them sufforcate.

Fire, totally. Hello, I mean jet propulsion. FROM MY HANDS?

Plus I'd be MEGA hot! ;)
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Shadow on September 19, 2006, 06:57:06 am
You forgot Sandbending. Which I would do, cause then I could look like a Tusken Raider and not worry about getting sand in my shorts at the beach. That and I could bend sand in someone's eyes.

EDIT: And Hitomi, i'm surprised your not the first person who choose fire and say "I got fire, IN MY PANTS!" Bravo
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Boris on September 19, 2006, 09:04:50 am
the sand is a form of earthbending that folks out in the desert mastered.

Me? Water, totally. I'm all about waves n flow n junk.~  Air and fire have some fluid dynamics to them too, but nothing like water.
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Bluejay on September 19, 2006, 11:06:09 am
Air if done right can basically end firebending in it's tracks, if airbending can create a vaccum, you can stop any fire from forming, if not, redirect the flow of air to maybe change the path the fire takes.
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: Boris on September 19, 2006, 11:13:13 am
The fire style is agressive though, so you gotta be really REALLY on the ball about keeping that vaccume where it's needed and not getting eventually punched in the face if they charge in. I don't think it would work all that well. Air is really better used as a game of redirection, push the flame away, or back at it's attacker if you're really good.
Title: Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Post by: FyberOptic on September 19, 2006, 07:07:57 pm
I doubt I'd pick fire since I'm always weary of things that are hot and dangerous.  Earth bending is cool but it still seems a bit destructive just in its very implementation.  Water bending is more cool in my opinion, but you have to have water available to actually use it.  I also like the healing aspect that's associated with it.  So it'd come down to that, or air bending, since the latter lets you fly + air is an abundant resource no matter where you go.

How far does earth bending go?  I notice they couldn't bend metal; else you could go all Magneto on them.  How about using its power to pull out gemstones and diamonds and use them for razor sharp projectiles, plus for monies too.  In theory you could use a crystal and harness just normal sunlight to create LASERS!

refraction doesn't actually work like that, sorry. Nevertheless, gemstones seem to be within the reach of powerful earthbenders, based on Bumi's use of the gems in the episode where he first shows up. so razor sharp projectiles? Just maybe.

Post by: MDude on September 20, 2006, 08:09:28 pm
I don't know what element I would go with. So instead, I'll list what I'd try to do with each!

With firebending, I would probably make a lot of things out of metal by carving out molds and melting the metal so I can pour it in, and also to start up blast furnaces. And if i could use lightning too, I would go arounding making weird electrical effects, like Saint Elmo's fire. I would also use my abilitys to power various engine, if I had them.

With earthbending, I would buld and/or tunnel out a building to make into a fortress/workshop/labyrynth/whatever, and also a set of stone dolls that I would use in a puppet theatre. And according to the Wiki on the show, you can also do magetic stuff with earthbending, which I would of course use to stick things to other things.

With waterbending, I would power hydrolic devices, and to put myself into stasis so I could go to THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. Also snowball making.

With airbending, I would power windmills and boats, and to hold a blanket over me as a form of shade, to float away whenever I wanted to leave, and generaly to be aloof and lazy. Also, I would give myself a beach bum accent for absolutley no reason whatsoever.

But no matter what, I would use my bending powers to pull annoying pranks, like taking out the glass in a window and replacing it with ice, so they'll be like "Wait why is my window melting?". CALL ME THE TRICKSTAVATAR.

I'll go with earth, gemstones would definatly be cool.  Magnetic powers would also be nice.

And also I can say that "Its all about rock and getting stoned."

Creepy Ba Sing Se is creeeeeeeeeepyyyyyy. Avatar Aang should have offed Long Feng right then and there and saved himself the headache of assuredly having to do later. Still, what with hypnotism, puppet governments, and all, Avatar just took a turn for the awesome. Something about Ju Di being replaced there just tears at the pit of your stomach. So where does that leave us?

(robot) Roll Call:
Long Feng and the tradition gaurd: in control of everything in Ba Sing Se, running a brainwashing organization, generally ignoring problems outside the walls. (to keep themselves in power assumedly since they don't seem to care for general welfare.)
Jet: Smiley and happy. There is no war within the walls.
Smellerbee and Longshot: Blending into the crowd currently. Think they'll try to get Jet back? I assume so, but it's possible they've fallen out with him there and just don't care anymore.
Zuko and Iroh: Thanks to Iroh, they'll probably be running their own Tea House soon enough. Not raising any suspiscion except maybe for the fact that Zuko knows swording pretty well. I wonder if the White Lotus society will come into play again, seeing as we're really into the game of politics right now, and need to give Iroh some more chance to be awesome
The GAang: Basically under surveilence to the point of being unable to accomplish anything. Toph is pissed, but knows better than to open her mouth. So Aang and Katara will be mouthy about unfairness and hiding the war and whatnot, but the one who's really gonna get in trouble here is Sokka, who's too smart about people en mass for his own good. He'll come up with one of those trademark good ideas and the tradition gaurd will haul him off. Alternatively, it just struck me that aside from being smart enough not to go against the flow, Toph can't be hypnotized by lights, and can earthbend out of any situation they leave her in. PLOT DEVICE POSSIBLY?

I had other thoughts but I lost them while I slept, oh well.

The whole episode reminded me of 1984. Especially with the government being a figurehead, like in the book. Definitely a darker episode.

Ok guys, these are gonna be some pretty serious spoilers, so I'm coloring them to avoid reading if you DO NOT WANT. What these are are medium detail episode summaries. You'll still get full enjoyment out of watching them when they come on, but it is spoilers nevertheless which some wish to avoid for your own reasons. Also, while the research I've done makes these seem legit, you know how the internet is with false info sometimes, so take it with your personal favorite ammount of salt.
(PEE ESS, these are straight copies from the posts of a local source over at Distant Horizon, so any weird language or wordings or focuses arn't my fault.)

TALES OF BA SING SE:
This episode is a bunch of short stories.
1.Katara and Toph go to a day spa and get pampered. Toph gets an “extra strength” pedicure on her calloused (Earthbending) feet. The girls have a mud bending fight while taking a mud bath, etc.
2.Uncle travels around the city collecting things for a picnic. Along the way he inadvertently helps strangers in different ways – he sings to quiet a baby, he helps a mugger get his life on track, etc.
3.Sokka walks past a Haiku club where people are reading haikus. When he accidentally enters the class, he finds out that he has a natural talent for haikus.
4.Zuko goes on a date with a girl that likes him. The two go to dinner and romantically stroll around Ba Sing Se.
5.Aang helps free the animals from a rundown zoo. His plan was to get them all to the agrarian zone in between the walls – a place where they could roam free. But getting them through the city was a bigger challenge than he realized.
6.Momo, looking for Appa, runs into a pack of angry cats. The cats chase Momo through the streets of Ba Sing Se. He tries to hide, acting like a street vendor’s dancing monkey. But the cats don’t let up and continue to chase him.

next up is Appa's Lost Days: (The title isn't confirmed, but seems likely given the details following)
This is an episode where we follow what happened to Appa starting when we lost him in Book 2 Earth Chapter 10.
Appa is taken by the Sandbenders from the library and sold to the Bedouins. Although Appa is tied down, he is hard to control so the Bedouins sell Appa to a traveling Fire Nation circus.
At the circus, a cruel animal trainer “breaks” Appa and forces him to perform in the circus. Appa manages to break free from the circus and goes searching for Aang. Unable to find him, he looks for a place to rest. Appa finds shelter in a barn, but he is violently chased away by a farmer. Still looking for shelter, Appa finds a cave but realizes that the cave is home to another animal – a Boar-q-pine. The two animals have a vicious fight and Appa is injured, stuck with Boar-q-needles. Appa is now becoming more animalistic and it shows when Suki (from Book 1 Chapter 4) comes across him. Appa is like an angry beast and Suki has to calm him down. She and the other Kyoshi warriors take care of Appa but it doesn’t last for long – the Kyoshi warriors are attacked by Azula, Mai and Ty Lee -- and Appa is forced to flee.

Finally we have Lake Laogai: (Also no title confirmation)
In Book 2 Chapter 17 Aang is searching around Ba Sing Se for Appa. He is lead off track by the Dai Li and Long Feng, who actually have Appa and who don’t want Aang to find him. The kids run into Jet who has been brainwashed by the Dai Li – he has information on a secret underground prison – could this be where Appa is? The kids try to deprogram Jet so that they can get the information about the prison from him. Meanwhile, Zuko finds out that Aang is in the city and decides that he is going to find the bison first. So the race to find Appa has begun!

Anyway, there you have it, hopefully I've brought some joy to you spolier seekers

So are there any rumors for who will take Iroh's voice actor's place?  I just don't think they're going to be able to find anyone who can pull off the wise yet humorous personality they've built for him so far.

Boris mentioned that rumor has it that the original fellow has voiced up through the end of season 2.  LATS HOPE.

My Guess is that The Fire Nation will kill Iroh before Zuko's eyes, sending him into a fury, when he comes down from it he decides to join the Avatar and teach him Fire Bending out of vengeance against Zuko's family.

This is just a guess, but to me it makes sense, as the next book should be fire.....

My guess is that he'll find out they killed his mother or something, and then choose to teach the Avatar so that the Fire Nation will be defeated.

Yeah, this episode wasn't even on TV tonight, but ended up on their website.  Luckily Borz found it!

If you'd rather not use the Flash player, you can download the FLV video file (http://www.fybertech.com/media/ni_avatar217_rt76652_320.flv), then use something like FLV Player (http://www.download.com/FLV-Player/3000-2139_4-10505954.html?tag=pub) to watch it.  Normally FLV will play in the VLC player, but this one apparently uses some new video codec which VLC can't do, so you need a different player, or as already mentioned, you can just use the flash player version I made (http://www.fybertech.com/misc/avatarplayer.html).

Overall, it was a perdy good episode!

Season ender isn't until Dec 1, but we're poised for some awesome times as ever.

Plot threads:

Aang and the Guru - seems straighforeward
Sokka and the water tribe men - manly manly men
Toph and the two guys, one of which is 'uncle' from Jackie Chan - ONE MORE THING?
Zuko's inner turmoil - sleep now, fire lord nutbag.
Zuko and Iroh? With a tea house? - I thought he was, you know, deathly ill at the moment, but this was in the synopsis.
Zuko and Katara? In a cave? - the sound you hear is 20,000 fangirls writing fics.[/4chan]
Ozai's Angels and the Kyoshi Warriors disguise - the sound year hear is 20 dojins worth of bondage rape detailing how they got the uniforms.[/4chan]
Long Feng and the subversive Dai Lee - Lex Luthor -always- has a backup plan.

Get a blue book, answer two, the test will be graded by my TA. (only Vito will laugh at this, but eh.)

Now, just because you guys are disapproving doesn't mean you know why. Shyamalmanamlan is kind of creative and kind of a good actor/director, but he's also kind of self-absorbed and kind of crazy. After Sixth Sense and Signs, his thoughts stopped connecting. Now I have little or no wish that he continue making movies, but he's convinced that he's a superfamous superstar and won't retire. Also, I'd much rather see a James Cameron movie called "Avatar" than Mister Night Shamammarama's shit take on what appears to be a very interesting show.

Frankly I actuallyed liked Unbreakable and a lot of folks said Sixth Sense was good. Maybe this guy can still do something at least passably worth watching if it's not his own cucoo brain trying to think up that "WHAT A TWIST" ending. Bear in mind multiple others could also be involved in the writing and production, so it may at least be entertaining, like a 6/10.

PEE ESS, the twist ending woul be Zutara.

Have an orriginal thought, which is something I havn't seen in a while. It offers another interp of Zuko's action in the finale, and some criticism of Aang that is, in retropsect, desereved. Orriginaly posted by some gal over on DH

Quote
Aang and Zuko's stories have almost always paralleled each other throughout Avatar, and the most notable parallels are typically the ones that stay within a specific episode. The Storm is the best example of this parallelism - important parts of both of their pasts come out in the same episode, with certain similarities between them, and they each begin to overcome these issues by the end of the episode. The Crossroads of Destiny, too, has obvious parallels - both Aang and Zuko have to make a choice which could determine the fate of the world, and they both fail spectacularly.

I think that this parallel, however, might not just be at the surface level - Aang's story could relate to Zuko's at a deeper level, one that could help make sense of the confusion caused by Zuko's choice.

First, we need to think back to the reason why these two have a choice to make in the first place - for both of them, the choice is created by their learning experiences at the end of the second season. For Aang, that's obvious - the Guru's training to open the chakras and allow him to utilize the Avatar State at will. For Zuko, it's not quite so obvious; however, by looking at Zuko's experiences through the last few episodes, it can be determined what Iroh was trying to teach him.

Iroh's teaching became very overt in Lake Laogai, though he was attempting to teach Zuko throughout the whole season. As he told Zuko - "It’s time for you to look inward, and begin asking yourself the big questions. Who are you? And what do you want?" Zuko is taught that he has control of his own destiny ("What [your destiny] means is up to you"), that he should follow his dreams ("Follow your dreams, and you will be rewarded", or something like that) - that he needs to be his own person. This is something that would be very important to Zuko being the Fire Lord and bringing balance back to the Fire Nation, just as the Avatar State is something very important to Aang being the Avatar and bringing balance back to the world.

Both Aang and Zuko's training appears to become contradictory at the very end, though. Aang is taught, as part of the fourth chakra, that love is important. His affection for Katara is portrayed by the Guru as a good thing, the key to overcoming his grief and allowing him to unlock the chakra. For the seventh chakra, however, he is told to give up his attachments, which he assumes to mean his affection for Katara. Zuko, similarly, is taught that it's important to be his own person, that he shouldn't do what Ozai or Iroh or anyone says just because they told him to, and that he should instead do what he himself wants to do. In Iroh's final conversation with Zuko in the cave, though, Iroh tells him that he should choose "good," suggesting that he should join with the Avatar and restore balance to the world, without really giving Zuko a reason to choose this for himself. Aang sees the fourth and seventh chakra training as love vs. no love, Zuko sees Iroh's training as choice vs. no choice, oversimplifying the new training into something in direct conflict with the past training.

The seemingly contradictory nature of the training, however, is not the extent of the similarities, however. In both characters' situations, the earlier training is comforting - Aang wants to hold on to his affection for Katara, and Zuko likes the idea of being in charge of his own destiny. So, when faced with the new and contradictory teachings, they refuse to accept it and choose instead to seek the first part of the training without the second. Aang puts off letting go of Katara; Zuko looks away and pauses before giving Iroh an answer. And in that short hesitation, something intervenes - Azula. Aang sees his vision of Katara in danger because Azula endangered her; Zuko gets confronted by his sister directly, but in each case, she's the one who forces the decision. And both Aang and Zuko make similar decisions - "forget the newer part of the training that I don't like and don't understand, and go with the earlier training, which is comforting and makes sense."

As usual when the two characters are paralleled, Aang ends up one step ahead of Zuko (though this time, it doesn't really help him) - he realizes that he has to try to follow the second part of the training even though he still doesn't like it or understand it. But by that point, it's too late - he isn't able to control the Avatar State properly, and ends up getting shot down by Azula before he can master it. Zuko, meanwhile, tries to choose his own destiny as Fire Lord, and Azula takes advantage of this to trap him.

At the end of the episode, neither Aang nor Zuko has learned their lesson fully, and probably endangered their chances of ever learning it fully. Aang got himself (nearly?) killed in the Avatar State, and while he (and, by implication, the Avatar Spirit) was revived, it's likely that there was some kind of negative effect that will make it harder for him to master it in the future. Zuko tried to seek his own destiny as Fire Lord, but got himself involved with Azula, putting him in danger of becoming a pawn, permanently.

Following this comparison through, both of them are probably going to need to learn the true meaning of the final part of their training. They also will need to do something else in order to get back to where they were before in order to actually use what they learned (it's quite possible, in my opinion, that they may learn to understand their training fully before they're actually in a position to be able to use it due to the complications). And when they learn this, they will both be much more powerful, and much more ready to face their chosen destinies - Aang for facing the Fire Lord, Zuko for becoming Fire Lord. And, at the end, Zuko will remain one step behind, since he can't actually become Fire Lord until Aang defeats the current Fire Lord. ;)

Some possible implications of this:
- Zuko is no more of a naive moron than Aang is, because they both made basically the same mistake and got themselves into trouble
- Zuko didn't actually make a plan to take down Azula, but he didn't "turn evil" either
- Both Aang and Zuko ended up farther away from their intended goal, but in a different direction - neither of them really went backwards or are going to need to retrace much of their former learning, but will need to do something completely different to master their lessons
- The completion of Aang and Zuko's extra step could possibly take place in a similar time-frame - if Aang fixes his Avatar State problem quickly, it's not unlikely that Zuko would get out of Azula's trap quickly as well.

Anyway, that lovely boxart (supposedly from Paramount's media kit site) was said by tvshowsondvd.com to be set for release on Oct 30, and all the episodes were to have aired by then, meaning it's likely S3 will begin in mid to late September.

And thats the news thats fit to print.

Kinda makes up for the wait, I guess. I only got into Avatar in the past month, so it's near-perfectly timed for me.
