Time for maximum infos:

BMP = Full quality, full color, huge filesize
GIF = Full quality, 256 colors or less, decent filesize, allows transparency, allows animation
JPG = Good to horrible quality, full color, small filesize
PNG = Full quality, full color, decent filesize, allows transparency/alpha channel (IE displays transparency/alpha channels incorrectly)

The good quality for JPG generally only applies to photographs.  It's a lossy compression, meaning anything which needs to retain actual pixels (such as with sprites) won't work well.

GIF is usually used by folks for sprites, as long as you don't get the colors mangled.  Some programs are better than others at handling the colors; MS Paint for example has a tendency to mess them up if you're not careful.  If you don't want to worry about that, use PNG.  I think it will one day RULE THE INTERNET.

Nobody will, because you'll just change to some identity in two weeks.

Okay, I'm challenging myself, if anyone has an 8-bit sprite and would like to see it in 16 bit... give me a shout, I doubt I'll do it justice, but I'll try my best.

I hope that png will become more common on the internet... JPG isn't good for anything else than photographs I think, and gif doesn't have enough colors. And never save gif files with MSPaint, it will just fix the image so it has about three colors. Maybe four.

There should be a new type of animation file.

There's a variation of PNG called MNG which allows animation and all sorts of fancy stuff, but naturally, it's not well supported in all browsers yet.

You can animate some pngs if you have the right stuff. I only make my sprites and backgrounds in png and I loss no color when I animated them in Gif movie gear.

I do all of my work in ImageReady. Paint is fine for spritesheets, but it can't edit all of the fancier filetypes (png, gif, etc) and it can animate too. Mind you, animating takes forever with it (although I have nothing to compare) and getting the sprites in the right place can be a problem sometimes.

Wait, Joefus, does this mean that one of my characters is basically a 32-bit FighterGuy except for the shoes?
