That tales of Ciono's comp brokery.
« on: January 26, 2006, 04:03:48 pm »
I haven't been doing so well in the technology department lately. Everytime I turn around, something else seems to be failing. Anyway, here's what's happened so far.

Problem 1: The battery life of my little iBook laptop had gotten down to about 30 minutes (turned out that it was worse than this, but I'll get back to that).

Solution to problem 1: Bought new battery for the computer.

Problem 2: Then, when the 1.9.2 patch came out for WoW, I discovered that if you don't renew your subscription to Norton Antivirus, it essentially become malware. It caused WoW to be unable to load, a problem I associated with the WoW patch, until I updated iTunes and had a similar problem.

Solution to problem 2: Control Panel/Add/Remove software, forcible deletion of Norton. Installed McAffee (I get it free as a student at Tech) and everything went back to being in working order.

Problem 3: iPod mini decides that it wants to commit suicide, so it jumps out of my pocket onto a hard floor. Stops working a couple of minutes later.

no solution yet

Problem 4: So, I'm running around apple.com/support/ipod trying to find a way to fix my little suicidal iPod when a window pops up to tell me that a fatal error has occured (on the computer, not the iPod). Well shit. I go in Disk Utility, it tells me that the Hard Drive shouldn't be working, get all my info off, and replace it.

Solution to problem 4: Took it too my Apple Store, they said there wasn't any way around it, and that they were amazed it was still even functioning. So it's currently in the shop (to a tune of close to $300).

I'm taking the iPod to the Apple Store next week, and it's still under warranty, so we'll see if they can't find a way to fix it. If they can't, they have this sweet little deal where I can get a 10% discount on the purchase of a new iPod if I trade in my old one (working or not). But that's my whole quest with technology lately.

This is the worst string of luck with Macs I've seen since my sister dropped her Powerbook and lost her CD drive. Hope everything gets fixed soon, man.
Ten years to the minute, no longer in it.

Forgot to mention some other info. The laptop was purchased, refurbed almost three years ago for only $699.

On the bright side though, the hard drive that I had was only 30gigs (unformatted), and the one that's going to replace it is 80 gigs.

300 is a bit stiff for a hard disk upgrade, I'd think, but you're payin for labor too I spose, since they're doin it.

Labor is where they'll get ya. When I cracked my lap top screen they wanted 700 dollars for labor plus the two hundred for the screen part. It almost cost me half of what I paid for the thing in the first place! I once worked at a computer place, I know for a fact that it only takes some people about forty five minutes to replace the monitor of a lap top.
I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney, then go for a car ride with Ted Kennedy.Neuf sed.

The labor is half the $300 dollars. But, meh, if the computer will last another of couple of years, then these little payouts are worth it. What'll really vex me is when I've had it back for a day or two, and the processor will light on fire or something. If it does though, I'll be sure to tell you all about it here.

Well, hot damn. This thing is pretty nice. Got the new battery installed and charged, got the bigger 80 gig hd (which they didn't charge me for at all, only charged for labor). Anyway, I'll be taking the iPod into my Mac store today some time, if I can just get that fixed, then I'll be very very happy inside, but we'll have to see what they can do about it. *runs away to put the new hd through it's paces*

* Ciono tries to hide pictures of naked apples

And by the way, I got the iPod replaced, so I'm even happy now.
