Title: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: FyberOptic on September 28, 2005, 07:57:30 pm
You know how it works, just post links to cool and interesting stuff.

Seems Google has gone into the TV biz! (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=403998&in_page_id=2&ct=5)

Pictures (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/09/photogalleries/giant_squid/index.html) of that giant live squid they found. (http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050926/full/050926-7.html)

Just for Mac, but a Paint type program geared specifically for people who work on stuff like sprites and icons and such. (http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/)

I seen the whole thing on opening weekend like a good Browncoat. Pretty cool, I gotta say, but I think I'm not longer so rabit a fan since I have some closure because of it.

I bet the Firefly wiki will see a lot of updates after this though. There is an RP game out for it now, too.

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (http://www-fi3.starwreck.com/).  This is an actual movie you can download, loosely based around Trek.  You can watch the trailer on their site to get an idear.  It's in another language with English subtitles, mind you.  I haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but I downloaded it this morning, and after seeing the trailer and jumping through some of the scenes of the movie, the space battle parts seem top-notch; almost show quality.  It's worth getting for that alone!

Numa Numa dance. (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/206373) the song is "Dragostea din tea" by some romanian pop band.

Nothing can destroy the amusement I got from those, fake or not.

Also, that YTMND doesn't do it justice.  I can't find a great copy, but the one on Google Video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7714643693602998196) is better than nothing, at least.

The Sand Game (http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/) has been what's keeping me occupied from time to time.  I'm not sure if there's any purpose to it at all, aside from just messing around.

SOME HINTS:

- If water touches plant, the plant will grow.
- If fire touches oil, it ignites
- If fire touches plant, it'll ignite
- Fire touching Cera burns slowly
- Turn off that stupid namekuji thing

I have no idea what properties the sand and salt have at the moment!

EDIT:  Apparently water makes the namekuji grow, and salt makes it shrink.

Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: MDude on January 06, 2006, 01:49:26 pm
Sand absorbs spouts, and I think salt might affect sand somehow. I filled the whole area with cera, then caught the oil on fire.

Edit: One problem I've had with it is that you can't make a water tower, because nothing can flow up.

Edit2: Here's a picture of how it is so far. It reminds of tectonic shifting.
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: FyberOptic on January 06, 2006, 02:43:27 pm
Ahh, it does absorb the spouts, doesn't it.  So at least sand does something.  Salt surely does too, it's prolly just a matter of finding out what.

But yeah I noticed that about the water thing too.  Frowners.

What they don't tell in this story is that apparently a guy bought a bunch of the books and reprogrammed'em, then returned'em to the store.  I'm not quite sure why they'd end up back on the shelves, since I thought returned stuff had to go back to the company, but who knows.  That's awl I know.

You know, at GameStop, our policy if someone returned a game, new or used, complaining it didn't work was if the disc looked okay, reseal it and re-sell it.  That's what I was told to do.
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: ecto on January 09, 2006, 05:05:28 pm
I think that policies bull shit. I tried to trade a game for another at Software etc. and they wouldn't take it becuase it had two little scratches on the back of it. Yet they had no problem selling me a game that had scratches covering the entire bottem of the disc. I tried taking it back and they wouldn't even offer store credit so I was stuck with it even after telling me I had six days to return it if I found something wrong with it.

While he does have his faults I still say it's better then having Kerry in office.I'm a republican and i'm admitting the leader of our nation isn't perfect. It doesn't mean I don't dislike the man. If there were more candidates I probobly would have voted either party. People blame 9/11 on Bush, but Clinton had many opportunities to capture Osama and chose to do nothing. Democrat... Republican... it doesn't matter, the whole system is fucked anyway, no president has been perfect, and the ones we hate aren't as bad as we make them out to be.  I only vote so I feel i have a right to bitch, and I only bitch because voting means jack shit in the electoral college.  If we returned to One man One vote then voting could mean something again (Look back at Hayes who wins by 1 vote)

Seenit.  A worse one is where that chick does a flip during some Olympic event I think it was, and busts the crap out of her head and bleeds everywhere.

"Half-Life" on an iPod (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1867155040270429847).  Even though it's not really Half-Life, it shows that there's possibly a Half-Life mod for Wolfenstein or Doom, since the latter two actually do run on the iPod

I think you have to have iPodLinux installed to do it.  Them wacky Linux guys manage to port it to everything, so I'm sure a lot of games for Linux would run on the iPod as a result.  I've seen simpler ones like Tetris and Asteroids, at least.

Remember the fancy Optimus Keyboard (http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/) that's already been pushed back by months and was due out in February?  Now it's not due till the end of 2006.  I'm still convinced it's all a trick . . !

You can, however, buy the Optimus Mini (http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus-mini/) three key thingamabob.  Rather useless if you ask me, and it's $100.  Imagine how much the full keyboard will cost if a thing with just three buttons is a hundred bucks.

There's a whole fleet of computer animators at my school that deal with alot of that water stuff. And actually, the reason it doesn't seem like real water moves that much is that the computer generated stuff lacks the bubbles and such that sort of dampens how much the water looks like it's moving.

And on a rather amusing note, there wasn't anything in that Vista video that wasn't them trying to copy something already in effect in Mac OSX. I always love it when Windows has to scramble to cover their ass to catch up with Mac. Even the discussion of everything needing to be a specific format is like when OSX first came out, and all the developers had to have the rounded windows to match the OSX interface.

I think the reason behind that is that no one wants a bunch of cleaning fluids in their ice. That stuff can be kind of toxic. I think they should do a similar test, but also including ice from people homes, and those giant bags if ice you get from bins in front of grocercy store.

I have asked for no ice in my drinks for years, but it was more of an "Ice takes up space that could be more productively filled with soda" sort of thing.... my crusade for no ice will continue ten fold now.

lol it's always cool when unexpected things happen, like with that whole epidemic before.  It shows how versatile the game can be, while at the same time, evidences the inherent problem of leaving it up to the players to handle the unlocking of things which affect more than just themselves.

A rather.. crude version of the actual Last Starfighter game (http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter.php).  I say crude because it seems to be poorly programmed, and it took me forever just to figure out how to play it, then I came to find it messed up my desktop icons.  -o-;;  But, it does have the sound effects and appearance, even if it is nearly impossible to play.

To get started, wait till it gets past all the initial "tests", and then hit 5 to insert coin, and alt or space to get started.  The rest of the controls are in the help, or you can get into the diagnostics with 0 on startup, but that's a whole nother example of the sloppy programmery . . !

Info on the next Bond movie (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060310/film_nm/bond_dc_1).  Apparently it'll lack gadgets, Moneypenny, and Q, but with good reason, since it tells the backstory.

I was surprised to see "Technology was beginning to overwhelm the story and the characters" being admitted, which is my gripe with the last few movies.  I'm actually kind of looking forward to this next one now.

I have to admit I'm a little worried about Bond if they're diverting so much from the modern norm, but like Fyber I think it'll be a breath of fresh air.  I think I'll enjoy it, i just hope it doesn't ruin the franchise.
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: FyberOptic on March 13, 2006, 11:48:24 am
I think they've already tarnished it a little at least, if you ask me.  He used to just be that quiet franchise where everyone knew his name, yet that's about all the public thought of him until a new movie popped around.  These days they try to stick his name on everything, and EA shits out Bond game after horrible Bond game just to make money, while the more recent films have been overhyped considering they've generally just been a bunch of special effects with somewhat mediocre plots.  I mean they captured the style of bond, and were exciting enough and all, but kind of lost the mood, for a lack of better way to explain it.

Anyway, since they changed out actors, I just think they shoulda taken a few years break again, like they did after Timothy Dalton.  It needed some time to regain its charm.

The host I use, Linode (http://www.linode.com), uses a form of virtualization.  The site basically runs on a virtual computer I have full access to.  It doesn't even have to run website software; some people use'em to host game servers and that sorta stuff.  It's handier than normal web hosting since you can do what you want, but you pay more as a result.  But it lets me have my own IRC server or whatever else I wanna run.

Linode is UML (http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/)-based, and will eventually switch to Xen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xen) which should make the whole site run faster, but who knows when that'll ever happen.

Sony continuously tries to push new formats and generally they fail, so I wouldn't waste my money on those UMD movies.  They've already lost their shelf space at Wal-marts.

Anyone thinking BETAMAX?  That was Sony too, you know.  Their upcoming blu-ray "dvd replacement" format, competing with HD-DVD, is likely to end up the same.

I think what would improve his ratings would be to stop putting our tax money into medical care for illegal aliens. Why should an illegal not have to pay thirty thousand dollars for an operation when a U.S. citizen does? I'm sorry but I just think there's something wrong with that.
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: FyberOptic on May 04, 2006, 11:05:34 am
It's more a matter of emergency medical care than anything else, since getting normal health insurance from the government in this country via legit methods is nearly impossible anymore.  They have to treat the person if they're hurt, but once they leave the hospital, they have no way of collecting payment.

The other biggest medical drain is delivering their babies, which then become legal US citizens and can then suck on our medicaid.

That Google Trends is interesting to mess around with.  I was putting in crazy things the other day to see what'd come up.

As for the TMNT movie, I'll go ahead and expect crap, that way if it turns out to be good, at least I'll be pleasantly surprised.  :D

A group of people drive the speed limit, blocking the entire highway, to demonstrate the need of a higher limit (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5366552067462745475).  I might argue that perhaps the speed limit was fine and that everyone trying to break it was just stupid, but it was interesting to watch nonetheless!

Quantum Leap movie?? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383588/)

OSX flaws fixed (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1961642,00.asp), OSX flaws left open (http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/05/12/78305_HNmacpatch_1.html).  If this were Microsoft, there would be a shit storm, even over the problems that got fixed.

Use your webcam like a Wii remote (http://psyark.jp/?entry=20051208003209).  Since it's in Japanese, just point your webcam at the Flash thing, and move it around (giving it permission to use your cam first of course).  You should see a crosshair start to move around based on your own movement.

Wow, it suddenly works much better when i realise that i'm supossed to point the camera at the screen. For a while, i thought it was a motion capture thing for my face or something. It still jerked around though, but that's because the camera did that thing where it dosn't sync up with the screen and lines go across it..
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links

TRIVIA TIME

The effects of pointing a webcam at the "screen" as a Wii remote are listed above. NOW...
Who can explain, to whatever extent, why this is so? Bonus points to who gets it right.

The answer: How should I know? Look it up.
Title: Re: Gimme some o'dem links
Post by: MDude on May 29, 2006, 05:42:42 am
The real answer: The crosshairs try to move in front of camera because they're realy minor celebrities trying to get mediia attention. And by that, I mean the flash program looks for three unevenly spaced red dots like on the flash program. That's why it only works when the three dots are in the veiwing area. In the Wii, it's more likely to be many smaller dots in a larger pattern. What would be cool is if it could be in an infrared pattern so you can't see it, but I don't think T.V.s can make those.

The sad thing, Bluejay, is that once you read what scientology is based on, you might STILL think it's a joke.  Prox is right, just use Wikipedia.  Not only do you get to read about the evil Xenu, spaceships, and thetan levels, you'll also learn how the guy that invented it was nothing more than a dirty crook, and how the whole organization is based around profit by using deceptive and illegal means.  That's scientology in a nutshell!

Meanwhile, a guy starts with a paper clip, trades it for stuff, ends up with a house (http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com/).

There's two or three of the Animusic things which are really neat.  The others kind of just "happen", like with robot arms and stuff, and aren't nearly as good in my opinion.  I like ones where balls are shooting up through the air and playing stuff and things of that nature.

lol @ twisted view of net neutrality.  POLITICS TIMMMMEEE.

What they don't mention is not only do ISPs want to be able to charge companies like Google extra (on top of their normal bandwidth fees) to carry their service to customers using these fancy fast pipes, but they want to be able to charge the end-user extra to be able to use certain services, and vary the bandwidth you're allowed to have based on which service.  A tiered internet.  Companies like Google already pay huge fees to deliver their content over the internet, and expecting them to pay the individual ISPs extra just to "carry" it, or carry it at as fast a speed as everything else, is a rediculous Republican-backed scam to make a bunch of money.  The internet isn't and has never been in trouble of "running out of bandwidth", so the whole "jamming up the pipes" routine they keep trying to pull is dumb.  One listen to senators like Ted Stevens will show you that they have no idea how the internet even works.  I stand behind leaving the internet as one big fat neutral pipe, to prevent such scammery by ISPs.

So like the video said, make up your own mind on net neutrality.  But perhaps it's best to read about it elsewhere than a biased flash video, or some guy named FyberOptic~!
