SECRET OF EVERMORE

the one and only game made by Square USA.

possibly the most experimental game they ever made.

anyone else played this?

I rented and somehow glitched the game so badly it messed up. It was during that fight with the two puppets. I used a bunch of alchemy and something happened where it bought up the save screen in the middle of combat. It confused me so I saved in a spot I wasn't used just to see what it would do. The game reset, and from then on would never go from the title screen to the save game menu. Returned it early and never said anything.

In USA, the game takes place in "Podunk".
In Germany, they changed it to "Grossostheim", which is where Square did their localizations.

Those guys' localizations (for other games too, see SoM) were all hilaribad.

This is one of my favorite SNES games. I've played it many times. It's simply wonderful.

It's a shame it uses an updated version of the buggy-as-fuck engine that Secret of Mana was built on, but the game acquits itself with honor.

umm... this game wasnt localized or translated into english, it was made in ENGLISH from teh start.
>>
It plays exactly like Secret of Mana but it's way more interesting.
The industry needs more games like this.

But Podunk is an awesome name. It's synonymous with Bumfuck.

The whole game has a B-movie tongue-in-cheek feel that's really consistent and awesome.

I never played the German version of course, so if that's as bad as you say, then that makes me sad. The English version was perfection.
>>
>>154321357
Yes. But then it was changed from English into everything else.

...I wonder if they even released it in Japan.

it also has the best main character that square ever produced.

For some reason I can't place, I seem to remember there being a lot of hate for Evermore. Not from me, of course, and apparently not from the people in this thread. Great game.

Needs better multiplayer.

Though Secret of Mana is made a gigantic joke by having the Sprite spam magic out of his ring. Whoever plays the hero is usually left waiting for two minutes for spell animations to finish and his attacks to charge all the way up.

They need to make more oldschool overhead 2D games like this

fact is games cost a fortune to make now. when games are so expensive to make, publishers are less likely to make bold and experimental games like evermore here.

so everyone plays it safe, bland and tasteless.

Well, I guess you could argue the DS is like that.
>>
I think it's better than SD3 and am really glad we got it. I messed around with the early part of Antiqua for days to figure out the optimal combination of trades and actions that would give me every single stat-boosting key item, taking into account the ones you could get from unexpected places later in the game during brief windows. I even went through the ROM one day to find the locations of the skillup tables, and made some Game Genie codes to use on my physical copy of the game that would make the levitation alchemy level up with a single use at all levels, just so I could have all my alchemy maxed out.

However, no matter how many hours I tried I never found the Sting formula.

The german translation still had the B-movie-feel in my opinion. Though some of the lines were really weird and cheesy. But I wouldn't say it was a bad translation.

Also, Großostheim is the seat of Nintendo of Europe. Not just some place where Square did it's localisation.
